Royal Castle, Ghanerao was founded in 1606 A.D. by Thakur Gopal Das Rathod of the Mertia clan of Rajputs. Located in a quiet village with a bustling mix of temple, stepwells and marble archways, Ghanerao lies 110 kms from Udaipur and a mere 5 kms from Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary. A truly magnificent edifice, the castle is built of red sandstone and spreads over a large area. The southern wall of the castle is pock marked with cannon balls which tells the story of battles fought in the olden days.
